The Boy Who Killed the Girl

Sometimes being a liberal is really difficult.  You don't get to fall back on your inner feelings or claim your inner feelings have anything to do with moral clarity.

I do not support the death penalty.  That does not mean I sometimes support it or I support it a little.  There is no such thing as supporting the death penalty a little.

Thus, I am on a thread on USA Today,
defending the life of the 13 hear old who stabbed the Barnard student to death.

I might enjoy beating this kid to death with my own hands,  after what he did to this girl. ....but I would not because I have morals and ethics and they inform me that it would be wrong.

I do not support the death penalty and he is a child.  Only the most heinous countries on the planet execute children. ...and I am not even sure about that.  Saudi Arabia is a member of The Convention on The Rights of a Child.  THEY do not even execute children. Russia has suspended their death penalty indefinitely.

So here I am,  a liberal,  weeping for the murder of this young woman and supporting the life of the child who did this while also wondering what would drive a child to this.

Being a liberal is difficult.  It is always more fun to just growl and say,  "Kill pussycat,  faster faster...  Put that boy on death row" but that is not me and that is not morality.  That is vengeance.   It is circular and only makes the world a worse place. .. Lee
